“aluminum window openings I actually have a tilt in aluminum window that can be removed leaving a 14" x 54" space. Can this unit be fitted for that? Is extra carpentry needed? Just measured it more accurately.”

You need a window that's at least a good 22" wide to accommodate the width of the unit.
