There may be several reasons for the compressor to be cycling on/off unexpectedly. One possibility is that the unit is turned on in sleep mode. When a unit is in sleep mode, the unit will alter the set temperature by a few degrees after an hour of being on. This setting is designed such that the air conditioner saves energy while the user sleeps. After 8 hours, the unit will return the original set temperature (see the owner's manual for more detail on sleep mode). Another possibility is the location where you are measuring the room temperature. The unit measures the temperature of the air coming into the unit. If this air is cooler than the air on the other side of the room, the set temperature may be reached at the unit (compressor turns off) prior to the temperature being reached on the other side of the room. Sizing the unit properly for the room is important to prevent this situation. Another possibility is that the filter on the unit is dirty. A filter that is not cleaned regularly may affect the unit's ability to properly detect the temperature of the air in the room and may cause the compressor to turn off and on irregularly.
