“It looks to me like keeping the front clean could be an issue. Do the "buttons" get dirty and does that dirt bleed onto the front of it?”

It is easy to clean if it gets dirty/ finger prints. I use a soft cloth with a vinegar water solution.

If the control panel becomes soiled, open the microwave oven door before cleaning. Wipe the panel with a cloth dampened slightly with water only. Dry with a soft cloth.
