The microwave measures exactly 29 7/8" wide. Our cabinet opening is 30 1/16" wide, and the unit just barely fits. If your bracket installation is precisely centered between the narrowest measurement in your opening, you might be okay with a 30" opening, but it's going to be a really snug fit. I would guess the 31" cutout suggestion is to factor in some wiggle room.
