its ok to go over an the amperage, but not under, the thing you need to determine is the specs on your existing wall outlet, the 50 amp will have heavier wire and could present (but not likely) a size problem at the terminal connections. also, the fuse box may be rated at 50 amps instead of 40 which would or could cause it not to rip properly.
