Hello, I recently purchased this item, but have not used it yet. I downloaded the owner's manual and, according to it, this item DOES have a detour option. Please go to this site to download the owner's manual: garmin.com/manuals/drive50

When it encounters traffic congestion ahead, it warns you and does provide any alternate routes. Per Garmin's website: Free Lifetime Traffic Avoidance Garmin traffic gives details about the situation, such as how many minutes of delay to expect and if there are any possible time-saving detours. It can even confirm whether or not you are on the fastest route. Lifetime traffic entitles your Garmin Drive 50 to receive free traffic information for its useful life, with no ads and no subscription fees. Garmin traffic is delivered straight to your Garmin Drive 50 — no smartphone needed. Hope that helps!

Yes, it will recalculate the route when a turn is missed or if you choose to stray from the intended route. The device will display "Recalculating" at the top of the screen.
