A quick push of the power button puts it into a standby (my definition) mode, however if you push and hold the power button for about 5 seconds a pop up window asks if you want to shut it off. Clicking "yes" it appears to totally shut it down, I know my battery lasts much longer by shutting it down that way. Also when you turn it back on it's a fresh start, meaning it doesn't immediately display the "where to" screen.
