I had the same problem with my new unit; the unit would operate in the car with a standard USB but it wouldn't charge the battery to allow it to run cordless unless it was charged with an original GARMIN cable. Also, the 'Traffic' feature only worked when using the OEM cable (cool feature which notifies you of accidents or other emergency info on the route you've programmed in). The cables are generally available at Garmin retailers but you'll probably get a better deal on a used one!
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. You can use your cellphone to get traffic updates. (It comes with the vehicle charger but the charger that comes with it does not enable traffic updates). You connect your phone to the GPS via Bluetooth and the GPS then gets traffic updates the same way it would if you were using Google Maps. If you don't connect it to your phone you will not get traffic updates unless you purchase a traffic cable (le the ones the older Garmins used with the round bump in the cable) that you plug into a lighter port.
