“A few of years ago I received a competitor's GPS (Mag...) as a gift. It had lifetime software & maps. Less than 24 months later the company quit supporting the unit - software and maps. How long should I expect Garmin to fully support a product?”

Garmin has been around for years, and is one of the leaders in the field. I see no reason to suspect that they will not be around longer than you can expect a unit to last.
