“Do you have to actively "turn on" that Foresquare and Trip Advisor stuff, will those functions remain OFF until I want to use them, or will they automatically turn themselves on and just pop up whenever they feel like it?”

I have not had the device long enough to try it out on the road. It will not exit "demo" mode until I do. So I cannot tell you. Wish I could.
