Does the Garmin unit have to be wired to the battery? null

it plugs in to the "cigarette lighter" or power outlet. it has to be plugged in.

If you mean directly wired to the battery, no, but it does have a "cigarette lighter" plug. The unit has an internal rechargeable battery, but it only holds a charge for a couple hours or so, so you're much better leaving it plugged into the cigarette lighter.
