“The price sign next to the device at Best Buy says the Alexa is optional and costs an additional $119.99 to use it. When I asked the salesman, he confirmed,stating that Amazon has to make money too or they couldn't continue offering Alexa. Is this true?”

No you can use Alexa for free but services like Amazon Music unlimitedm Sirius etc.. have monthly costs should you choose to use them. As a basic dash cam, alexa, and navigation assistant there is no cost at all to use
