The device has a built-in GPS but no built-in maps. The maps should always be up-to-date because they are in the cloud. Therefore the device uses your data plan only to get routing instructions initially and should you stray from the calculated route. It also sends your voice command to the cloud for processing.

It appears there are no downloaded maps as the moment I lost my data connection the device didn't know what to do. It seems it is always using your data plan as long as you are using pretty much any of its features other than dashcam.
