• No. I have an iPhone and one is not needed. There is nothing to purchase through the app plus Garmin has the best privacy policy I have seen of any company, period.

• The Garmin Index S2 connects directly to the internet via your WiFi to update your free Garmin Connect account you can access from a browser, or the Garmin specific mobile apps. I have not signed up for a new Garmin Connect account in some years now, but I believe it does not require a credit card. You can definitely check that for yourself before getting this scale, by setting up the account before hand. That account is meant to tie in all the Garmin fitness devices.
