Yes, you actually have to activate the running timer on it. Hold down your finger on the band until the menu comes up. Hit the running guy, and then hit the play button. When you stop exercising then hit the button again. It will calculate based on your time

I use an elliptical trainer at home and it counts the steps but less accurately than when I walk normally so I'm not sure it could accurately sense movement on a stationary bike but then I'm not sure any activity tracker could and I do recommend the Vivosmart.
