“Do you have to sync it to your phone? Does it use Data? This is a present for my dad and he practically has no data every month for his phone (it's a wireless card he lives in the wilderness). Will syncing use his data and can he just use it without syncing to his phone?”

The Garmin vívofit Fitness Band does not use cellular data. It records data through out the day and it can be synced with a compatible smartphone or a computer to upload the data to a Garmin Connect account. When syncing with a compatible smartphone that is has a data plan, it will use data to upload the information to a Garmin Connect account. If he has a compatible computer, he can sync the vívofit with a Garmin program called Garmin Express. The vívofit can be used without syncing to a smartphone or computer, but it will have limited functionality. The band comes with an ANT USB connector that you can use to sync it with your computer if you don't want to use it with your phone. The app uses data to sync your stats with your online profile, so for the user on limited data using the PC to update your records is the best way to go. The band also functions by itself very well. I actually only sync mine once every few days, but still use it regularly to track steps taken, distance traveled and calories burned throughout the day. It's also been great as a watch!

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.As far as I know about this device, it syncs to your phone a couple of times throughout the day which is why the battery life will last up to a year because it is not going to constantly be looking for a signal
