Hi Kim- The recommended clearances are 3 inches on each side, 3 inches on the top, and 1 inch in the rear. Microwaves need adequate air clearance on each side, the rear and the top to function properly. If you have additional clearances on the top (4.8:) and back (5.25"), 1.25" on each side should be sufficient. While it varies, on most, vents are generally on one side and back. Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.The vents are on the back of the microwave. I have not had any venting issues with it placed on a shelf. We don't have the 3" recommended space on the sides as well. The oven works well with no issues.
