Hi Linda- This is Sue at GE Appliances. Thanks for viewing! Microwaves need adequate air clearance on each side, the rear and the top to function properly. This allows good circulation for the intake and discharge air vents. 3" of clearance on both sides and the top and 1" clearance in the rear is recommended for best performance. If you have more clearance on top and in the back and less than the recommended clearance on the sides this should be fine. You need to make sure there is good air circulation around the microwave.
