how much clearance above the unit is needed? null

Not much , fits under our counter easily with plenty room to spare , about 5 inches , much smaller than our old microwave which I like! Plenty of room inside and have used all three settings, Convection oven , air fryer and microwave, power is great on it , could have a better instruction book but not hard to figure out in your own. We love ours !
