Are counter top and built in microwaves the same? null

No. Counter top are stand alone and can be moved on your countertop if you need. Built-ins are, as the name suggests, built into a cabinet and bolts into it.

I have had both. My built in was a little hard to reach - I am short. My countertop, if there is room, is easier to manage.
