Yes. There is a knob behind the door a child can't easily reach that disables it. It would be annoying if a kid played with it, but not dangerous.

Figuratively, yes, a person under 18 years old would be able to operate this appliance if they knew how to use it. However, we take safety very seriously and have implemented features to ensure this. This model has a child lockout mechanism that can be used by turning the knob to OFF and removing it completely when you're not compacting trash.
