QuestionOur GE microwave model #JVM3160DF2WW not longer works. We would like to reuse the existing back wall bracket with our next GE over the range microwave purchase. What model do you suggest that will match with the bracket. Thank you.

- Answer Hey there, and thanks for contacting us. We hate to hear your microwave is no longer working, but we do appreciate you choosing GE Appliances for your next model! Unfortunately, you would not be able to reuse your existing bracket – we regret any inconvenience this may cause, but the mounting bracket included with the new microwave should be used, as the bracket is specific to each model. (The new screws, bolts and exhaust adapter should also be used.) That said, all 30” over-the-range microwaves are approximately the same width and designed to fit into a 30” wide cabinet opening, so any of our over-the-range models of that width will work as a replacement for your existing model. Several of our models may work for you - PVM9179DRWW, for example, also has a white finish and has similar capacity and dimensions as your last model. If you’d like to view other options, you can do so on our GE Appliances website by viewing the ‘Kitchen’ tab, selecting ‘All Microwaves’ and using the filtering options on the side to choose ‘Over-the-Range’ as your type of microwave. - Answer Hi - We certainly appreciate your loyalty! All GE 30" over-the-range microwaves are approximately the same width, and are designed to fit into a 30" wide cabinet opening. Therefore, any of our 30" over-the-range models will work as a replacement for your existing 30" over-the-range model JVM1540DP1WW. Also, the over-the-range models are all designed for adaptation for the following three types of ventilation: 1. Outside Exhaust (Vertical – Delivered from factory in vertical position). 2. Outside Exhaust (Horizontal). 3. Recirculating (Non-vented ductless). This makes choosing a replacement microwave easy. NOTE: When replacing an over-the-range microwave, the mounting bracket included with the new microwave should be used since the mounting bracket is specific to each model. QuestionOn our new GE JVM3160RF2SS, the clock/timer display is extremely bright, brighter than I recall on the identical unit we replaced. Can this display brightness be adjusted somehow? If it's in the manual, I missed it!

- Answer Same issue with me. Clock light is too bright. Almost hurts the eyes to look at it. Our previous same GE microwave was much more subdued and the light was a green. Softer green light. Possible solution might be to remove the control cover and insert a piece of transparent green film over the clock / control area. Dean Mountlake Terrace, WA

QuestionHello, We need to replace our white Kenmore Model 721.89941490 - serial #611KM05137 over the range microwave. Which GE MW will work? There are cabinets on either side of the stove/microwave.

- Answer Watch out. NOT all over-the-range microwaves are the same HEIGHT. The old Kenmore you have is 15 1/2 inches high. I know because I have the same one from 1995 and it just died. All the new ones for over the range are either a lot shorter in height or about 16 1/2 inches high. I Don't know what the code is for clearance between your range top and the bottom of the microwave, but this extra inch might put you out of spec. Also, if you have tiles on the wall behind the range, like I do, and they were cut away to allow for the 15 1/2 inch high microwave to fit flush to the wall under the cabinet, then the taller ones will not fit. You will need to either 1) raise the cabinet, 2) cut more tile away, which is hard to do without breaking tiles 3) cut away the underside of the cabinet which may not be possible if it is a solid board 4) mount the microwave a tile-thickness away from the wall, This would be my preference. You would need to put a spacer the thickness of the tiles behind the new mounting rail. You may still be out of spec with the range-to-microwave clearance.

- Answer Hello, This is Lisa from GE. If you had an over the range microwave, any of our 30 inch wide over the range models will fit in the same space. There may be a slight difference in height and depth, but the width will fit. You will need to use the mounting plate that comes with the new model. Model JVM3160DFBB should work fine. The model beginning with JNM means it comes from factory as a non-vented or recirculating. the model that starts JVM means it comes from factory as vented model but you can change to recirculating when ready to install it. QuestionHello. I am looking to replace a GE over the range microwave oven which is model #JVM1440WH04, with the JVM3160DFWW. My question is are the top screws and the rear mounting brackets identical or in the same locations so that it could be a straight swap.

- Answer The installer said there are two types of mounting brackets. In his work, he says it's a 50-50 chance the old and new will be the same (for GE). In our case, the top holes and the mounting bracket were different. But the installer did an excellent job of replacing the old/new bracket and of drilling new holes into the cabinet above. I covered old holes with duct tape, making the cabinet bottom still useable for some storage. Electric cord could use the old hole, and vent cutout was the same.

QuestionMy model JE1640WB 001 stopped working and makes a terrible noise. Its built in so I want one that will fit the same space without having to replace the surround area. Is this model the correct one to purchase or is there another one that will fit.

- Answer My experience (1/2019) was with replacing a GE Model JVM231WV001 30" wide, circa 1995, with a current production, GE JVM3160DFCC with the same, standard width. I elected for delivery and installation. The installers were in and out the front door in exactly 15 minutes --- having dismounted the old unit, drilled new bolt holes, installed a new bracket, mounted and tested the new unit , plus carted away the old unit (no disposal charge). These guys really knew what they were doing. The lesson here is that it was a very wise choice to go with professional installation on what would have been a very tedious job for this skilled home owner..

When the model is manufactured, the extra number is placed on the appliance rating plate and product registration card. This number is used to identify manufacturing specific data when the appliance is made. Should service or parts be needed, this is used as an identifier for the specific appliance.
