“I took out the filter to clean but behind the filter (the metal grill or coils) is dirty. I can't open the front to vacuum the huge amount of dust that has accumulated. This AC is NO longer as cold as it use to be and it freezes on occasion. Help.”

I'd recommend you see if a handheld Swiffer is thin enough to carefully slide in there and perhaps vacuum the outside of the unit and change the filter more often to help cut down on dust inside.
