No, you can't run it without having display lights on, unless they burn out! I guess you could put duct tape, weather stripping foam/tape or tape cardboard over the control panel, however, then you'd have to guess what all your settings are on. This is a first time for me hearing this, especially since you wouldn't see light as you sleep; these lights are not that bright unless maybe you're just a few inches from it!
