“In the instructions for first time use it says to put in 2 quarts of water in the tub and to start the machine but doesn't say I should hook up the hose is this true or should I also run the hose? 2nd part should I run it empty first?”

I think the 2 quarts is to prime the pump. I added 2 quarts then ran the first load of dishes hooked up to the water supply.
