If there is not a filter in it will it still run null

Hello. Thanks for reaching out! You must use the filter bypass plug when a replacement filter cartridge is not available. The dispenser and the icemaker will not operate without the filter or filter bypass plug. Some models do not come equipped with the filter bypass plug. To obtain a free bypass plug call 800-GECARES.
