Hi Dee- This is Sue at GE Appliances. Thanks for viewing our Top Load Washers! The lid lock engages when it is spinning above 50 RPM. You cannot set the washer to lock for the entire cycle. Pausing the machine during the spin cycle does unlock the lid, but the user must wait until the basket has completely coasted down to a stop before the lid unlocks, of course for safety reasons. Depending upon the speed at which the washer was spinning when it is paused and also depending upon the size of the load being washed, it could take as much as 3 minutes to coast to a stop and then unlock. The lock feature cannot be disabled. Thanks for checking with us!
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. The lid locks when it is first starting to fill with water, then it unlocks (after 20 seconds or so) and will continue to fill with water even with the lid open. Don't know if you can unlock permanently.

If you need to add anything you can hit the pause and add to the wash load. While the lid is open you can hit the start button without closing the lid and it will resume adding water with the lid up. As far as being shut off. I don't think you can do that.
