“microwave oven combo not fitting. My question is, what should I measure. the entire unit or the extra opening, because the new unit isn't as big as the original unit we had?? so there is open space over the microwave. maybe about 2 inches.”

You should measure your cabinet cutout opening and then locate the built-in microwave that offers a trim kit with the same cabinet cutout opening. This trim kit is for a cabinet opening of 16-3/4" high x 25-1/2" wide x 19-1/2" or 22" deep.
