Closing a door quickly can force air into the other compartment, causing this to happen. There is no harm in using a GFCI or GFI outlet for your refrigerator. However, the compressor is sensitive to temperature and current overloads, and will shut itself down with a surge. It will also restart itself. A GFCI or GFI outlet will shut off and will override this system. If there is a power surge and the outlet shuts off, your refrigerator would not restart. This could cause food spoilage.
