You don’t need to install a drain, that’s an option. The unit is using the condensation water to cool down, you can say that in a way. Therefore it makes a sound like water spraying on a fan. Of that sound bothers you then you can remove the plug underneath and connect a drain. To answer your question though, drain hole looks like 1/2”.
