Hi DrDave- The added depth is where the conduit is located. It does not stretch all the way across the width if the cooktop. We don't provide specifications on its exact location. If you're installing the unit above an approved GE wall oven, then the area where this is deeper lines up with wall oven where the junction box is located. If not above a wall oven, keep in mind that you need 5" from the bottom of the cooktop to a drawer, etc. Keep in touch! Sue
