This fridge is not counter depth. My countertop is about 24” wide and the fridge sticks out almost 9” not including the handles.

That is correct. It does stick out further than the standard size double door. My old fridge stuck out a little past the cabinets. Don't think the cabinet was designed to be flush with all refrigerators. Especially if you have a small kitchen like myself.
