“if you set the water level at MAX does the water fill to the top of the tub? or do you still have to use the DEEP FILL button to add more water if you want to fill it to the highest level? I'm just trying to figure out the purpose of the DEEP FILL button”

This machine actually does whatever it wants to do. After a few washes it just changes whatever you decide to program into it to be whatever it feels like doing. And then after you've had it for 15 months it will break and you'll need to buy another one.
