Yes you can. Pick your cycle options, leave the lid closed & press start. The washer will start to add water, starting & stopping in the process while it senses the load. When it starts to fill steadily go ahead & lift the lid, add your detergent & clothes. I do this & rinse out the measuring cup with the water coming in.

You wait a few seconds and you can hear the water flow kick in, let it fill to the level you what then add your clothes. Personally, I put my clothes in and start the washer and as the water starts to fill the tank I hold my cup of liquid detergent under the flow of water to dilute it and pour it around on top of my clothes. This method has not caused any damage to my clothes and works very well for me.

The washer will not fill with water when Precise Fill is selected if the lid is opened. When the lid is closed the machine is able to begin filling with water in order to sense the load size. I do not see your proposed method in the manual. My washer has a soak option and I use it often, because I do yard work, gardening and repair my gas-powered engines , so my clothes get very dirty. I follow the manual and get excellent results.
