Yes you can it gives 3 short bursts of water to see what cycle it is on after that it starts filling then you can open the lid and add whatever you want

On models with a lid lock and both Precise Fill and individual load size selections (ex. small, medium, etc.), including Model #: GTW465ASNWW, the washer will fill with the lid up when you select a specific load size. This is because the washer does not use load sensing to fill for a set load size. The washer will lock while filling if you choose Precise Fill. It is critical that the lid stays down. Precise Fill senses the load and fills appropriately, so you don't want to add items while it is filling. The washer will not fill while the lid is up when using Precise Fill.
