“Is it safe to plug this machine into those thick orange extension cords? I live in a small apartment and the only space I have for the machine doesn't have an outlet close enough to plug without using an extension cord.”

I sm a retired electrician:if the cord is as shart as possible and heavy guage and not coiled up It should be ok .just make sure it is not getting very warm the cord
