Hi Paul, thanks for reaching out! The correct operating temperature of chest and upright freezers, including smaller, compact models is -5 to +5 degrees Fahrenheit. In order to take the temperature of solid food, place a thermometer between frozen packages or in some ice cream. The positions on the temperature dial corresponds to hope often the compressor will run and does not equate to an actual temperature. Setting the control to MIN is the warmest setting. Setting the control to MAX is the coldest setting. We hope that this helps! All the best. -Michael
