Hi Snow- GE ranges meet all standards set by the Underwriters Laboratories (UL). UL evaluates external temperature limitations for ranges. The front and sides of a range can vary from 152 to 212 degrees F., depending on the materials. There are currently no temperature limitations for the horizontal surface, or cooktop, of a range. The actual burner area and area directly under the cookware will be hotter than the surrounding areas. When the glass around each burner goes above 150 degrees F, the Hot Surface Light will come on to remind you that the surface is hot. After the unit is turned off, the light will remain on until the area around the burner has cooled to below 150 degrees F. This usually takes about twenty minutes. We hope this is helpful. Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Not really no. I experimented with mine when I first started using it. Most the cooktop itself stays very cool to the touch. The heat begins around an inch from the burner itself.
