It's like a black frame around the square where you cans see inside. The overall impression is dark like the stove top but not completely so maybe you could consider the average effect grey. You definitely need the ceramabryte to keep the stove top clean. It gets dirty easily. I never scrubbed a stove top this much. I don't know about your measurements mine sticks out some. Having those controls flat is and in front of the burners is interesting because it does make the handles a little further away versus my old stove where the controls were vertically placed on the front. All in all I like it though, it's easy to read the dials.
