“I am having trouble removing the lower side panel of the unit to clean the filter. The owner's manual says it should come right off. Am I missing something?”

Look at the unit from behind. You'll see a large white grill on the back, near the top of the unit. That's the filter. Squeeze the two clips at the top and pull the filter toward you. Carefully clear the screen on that grill and then replace.

The process of removing the filter should simply involve pulling out the upper filter panel, near the top of the air conditioner, rather than a lower one.
