Look at the unit from behind. You'll see a large white grill on the back, near the top of the unit. That's the filter. Squeeze the two clips at the top and pull the filter toward you. Carefully clear the screen on that grill and then replace.

We know that may have been an inconvenience and would like to assist. The process of removing the filter should simply involve pulling out the upper filter panel, near the top of the air conditioner, rather than a lower one.
