The compressor runs as long as the unit indicates that it is making ice (left most indicator light). Yes it is a tad noisier than a typical fridge. I did notice that the initial, out of the box, sound levels seemed excessive but gradually did diminish after a couple of weeks. Still it DOES make noise.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Hello- We appreciate your purchase. Congratulations on your new Opal, we are happy to help! The Opal Ice Maker is a complex device that combines electrical and mechanical components such as a compressor, pump, motors and fans to deliver perfect nugget ice. These components power on at different times during the ice making cycle. There will be some noise associated with the running of these components. These normal noises typically cease after 10 to 45 minutes within the ice making cycle. Hard surfaces like the floor, walls and countertops can amplify these sounds. We have a list of normal sounds on our site if you'd like to check it out. If you have any other questions, please let us know. We are here to help! Joyce@GEAppliances
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. My only makes noise while it fill up to make the ice. Other than that it is very quite. You may need to take yours back and tell them something may be wrong with it. I have had no problems out of mine at all.
