You can just fill the tank when it runs out. The side tank + internal reservoir hold about 1 gallon of water & it will run until it's nearly dry. Once it's empty, it will light up letting you know you need to fill the water tank. We've had it run down a few times, but I just glance at it some times & fill up the tank if I notice it's nearly empty most of the time.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.The unit has 2 tanks. There is a holding tank beneath the ice tray and a side tank. The side tank is utilized once the main tank in the unit is depleted. It basically pulls water from the side tank to the main tank. The machine constantly makes ice until the ice tray is full and then it stops. When you remove any ice after it's full it will begin again making ice. I am uncertain as to what happens when the machine runs out of water as I have always just filled the side tank once it was low. I know there is a pump to pull water from the side tank and most pumps do not do well when they start sucking air. I have to refill the side tank about once every 2 days, because we use a great deal of ice from this machine all day long. If you don't use ice it just recycles the water from the melting ice. Just refill the side tank when the water runs out and if you want to refill it less remove the ice tray and fill the internal reservoir also at the same time.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Just when the ice runs out. No need to continue refilling if you have plenty of ice. Also, it does NOT come with a filter. They are sold separately, but if you’re using ice from your fridge or another filtered source, there’s no need to buy one.
