Our Opal 2.0 started leaking after a couple of years of regular daily use. I ran the cleaning cycle, but not nearly as often as recommended. Water was pooling under the ice maker. After moving it to clean up, we noticed what looked like calcification, or mineral deposits, along the bottom edges and on the countertop. I disassembled the entire unit, cleaned everything down to the auger that delivers ice and put it back together. I used CLR with a toothbrush, Scotchbrite pad and a lot of elbow grease. This process took about 4 hours total. Now I’m waiting to restart the ice maker since it was laying on its side for disassembly. It has to sit upright for about 4 more hours for the oil to drain from the compressor lines. I’ll run the unit through a few cleaning cycles with dilutions of white vinegar and then bleach after all this is finished. Hopefully, this will resolve the water leaking issues and provide another couple of years of service before going through another complete tear down for inspection. That being said, it’s indispensable when working but not many customers are going to want to go to these extents to keep their ice maker running. They’d probably throw it away (in an environmentally friendly way, of course) and buy another one, which is exactly what I’ll do if this didn’t resolve the leak! Bottom line, DO NOT neglect weekly cleaning of this unit or you will experience problems down the road.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.18 months ago we were still using our first Opal; since then not only did the first one develop an internal leak, but its replacement has as well! It's the only ice maker we found that produces pebbled ice, but with this level of reliability I can't see us getting another.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. The reason I bought it was because a coworker suggested it to me and she has owned one for two years. Even after two years hers is up and running the same it was and she uses it just as much as when she first got it. I know this is one of those friend of a friend scenarios, but I am the type of person that researches a LOT before buying and her suggestion and review was the reason I bought mine. Hope that helps a little!
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Just started using this past weekend and 1) there is a jet stream of water that pours into the ice bin for 3+ min melting a lot of the ice every time the unit cycles on to make ice (GE rep said normal but lots of differing opinions on that) and 2) noticed pooling of water on our countertop (significant amount) underneath the unit (and not from opening the bin to scoop ice)...assuming that is not normal...going to unfortunately return.
