Also, can this be mounted so that the microwave is slightly in front of the trim, or is the distance between the microwave and the trim fixed by the way it mounts to the rails?”

Hello - this is Nancy at GE and I am happy to help you. There would be a microwave trim kit overlap of 1" for the 27" trim kits and an overlap of 2-1/2" if you install the 30" trim kit. The minimum depth with the receptacle outside the cutout is 16" and the minimum depth needed with the receptacle inside the cutout is 18".
