Silent mode means that, during the times that you schedule silent mode, the watch will not receive calls or texts--nor will it make any sounds. This is useful for when your kid has the watch on at school. If there's an emergency, you can deactivate silent mode at any time from the app on your own phone. This is a useful feature, but I don't know that it's worth the $50 monthly service fee (if it's the only device on a Verizon account).
