Within the Daydream App Store, there are about 40 or so free titles. Haven't explored too many yet (real life getting in the way). Many are sightseeing apps. There may be some games too.

Please try again later.I'm not sure those are actually ads produced by Google - but if they are, I'm fairly sure they're referencing the many apps available on the daydream platform that are free to everyone. There are easily more than 40, and the only way you can get them is if you have this headset.

That was likely a link to an off-site third party which was trying to install malware onto your machine.
