“I heard The nest will work great for a while but then goes off line. We want to put it in a house we will not be in at times for months. Will it be problem if we aren't in the home? Or if power goes out for a while does it have to be reset?”

No, you can adjust things through the app on your phone and when we had a power outage it just comes back on once power is restored and continues with the same settings as before.
