Without a common wire, your Nest thermostat will charge itself using your existing heating and cooling wires. Depending on your heating and cooling system, you may need a common wire installed to be compatible with the Nest thermostat. You don't need it because the Nest will run on the two AA batteries that are included with the thermostat. Take a look at the Nest wiring diagram or view the YouTube video from Google to compare your existing wires with the diagram. I never used my C wire on previous thermostats but decided to hook it up since the Nest accepts it. I am told the batteries last a really long time!
