You aren't upgrading your line, just your phone. Buy it at BestBuy and that should be your only cost. Then log into your Verizon account online and add the new phone. After that, turn on the new phone and transfer all of the content from your old phone … Google made this process easier than ever.

I have the exact same question. And I have 7 Verizon Lines on my account, one of which is currently unused, so it it not as though Verizon needs to use a payment plan to lock me in or anything. And as far as I am aware, upfront payment is preferred (typically), especially for behemoths like Verizon that need cash flow to service debt (unless Verizon really wants to be in the consumer lending market. If it is true that we must pay according to the contract (I.e. prepayment provisions are not included), this is a sucker’s deal (to be frank); Verizon would, if this were the case, be making a hefty arbitrage on that implicit interest earned on phones “lent” to consumers whom they, with Google’s duplicity (given the exclusivity), force consumers with the requisite cash to borrow from them and pay implicit interest rather than just accepting payment in full upfront.
