I am on sprint. I was eligible for an upgrade and i owned my phone outright. No payment or lease shenanigans. I bought the unlocked 3a xl and was eligible for the discount. in store, no problems. Fastest phone purchase, ever.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.So it means that with activation you have to add a line to your plan. What I did is I just got the phone paid the $479 to replace an existing phone I had. It works great.

If you prefer to use a different carrier, you can buy it today and activate service later. Either way, this unlocked phone allows you to switch carriers whenever you want." It seems like it is unlocked either way.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.It means you have to activate with that carrier to buy the phone with the special discount. It's usually for new activations. If you simply want to switch phones, then you need to buy the unlocked version.
